South Africa's labour market is evolving rapidly, driven by digital transformation, changing industries, and emerging technologies. As these changes reshape the world of work, the need for skills development that is both responsive and future-focused has never been greater.
Lulaway recently had the privilege of attending the JBS Skills Forum: Workforce Transition and Skills Development in the Digital Economy, hosted by the Johannesburg Business School Centre for Entrepreneurship in partnership with FP&M SETA. The forum brought together industry leaders, policymakers, educators, and workforce development practitioners to explore how South Africa can better prepare its workforce for the opportunities and challenges of the digital economy.
One of the strongest themes to emerge from the discussions was that solving South Africa's employment challenges requires more than isolated training programmes. Instead, it calls for an integrated approach that aligns education, industry, and skills development with the needs of a rapidly changing economy.
Several strategic recommendations stood out during the forum:
These discussions closely align with Lulaway's mission to connect people to meaningful economic opportunities through innovative, demand-driven employment solutions. We believe that preparing people for work is about more than technical training—it's about equipping them with the confidence, adaptability, and lifelong learning mindset needed to thrive in an ever-changing labour market.
Collaboration remains one of the most important ingredients for creating sustainable employment outcomes. Forums like these provide valuable opportunities for stakeholders across sectors to share research, exchange ideas, and work towards practical solutions that strengthen South Africa's workforce.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Johannesburg Business School Centre for Entrepreneurship and FP&M SETA for convening this important conversation and creating a platform for evidence-based dialogue on workforce development.
At Lulaway, we remain committed to contributing to these conversations and partnering with organisations that are shaping a more inclusive, resilient, and future-ready workforce.
